The other day I told my daughter some wonderful words of wisdom. Shawn (being Shawn) said, "Where did you hear that -- I'm not sure it's true". I 100% knew it was true because years ago my dad told me. You see whenever my dad taught me something growing up, to me, it was true.
My dad taught me many lessons in my life -- some I appreciated more than others as a child. All I appreciate now as an adult. I owe my stellar winter driving skills to my dad. Turn into the curve when sliding on ice, pump the brake; don't let it lock. (Of course now I have anti-lock brakes on my car.) I can drive a manual transmission thanks to my dad. I've learned how to love people and give my all to the task of helping others.
Somewhere along the line I turned into a parent. You know the same type that my dad was. It's funny as I write this with a 13 year old and 9 (almost 10) year old I STILL cannot believe that God thinks I'm the most qualified to be raising these children! Most days I feel like I'm only fumbling my way through life. All the more important that I continually look to the One who wants to guide my every steps!
Anyway -- back to my words of wisdom for Keyanna. It really got Shawn and I thinking. We need to guard our words to our kids. I can remember words that my father shared with me all the way back to being 5 years old. We need to teach them things that we want to last their lifetime. I'm so thankful for my childhood -- I want Keyanna and Nathan to be thankful for theirs also. I think it's awesome that Shawn is their dad. He's the best choice to teach my children what a dad needs to teach them.
Although Shawn doesn't drive stick. I'll have to cover that one :)
